Changes in wedding customs in Gornja Poljica in the hinterland of Split, Croatia, in the last hundred years

Aim: To examine how wedding customs have acquired unwritten rules over time and much they changed in the last hundred years.Methods: Semi-structured interviews with three respondents from Gornja Poljica (Split city hinterland) a secondary analysis of sources aim analyzing course weddings generations Poljica.Results: As past, there is procedure consisting gathering guests, pick-up bride at her home, ceremony, celebration, visit bride’s family to new home. The are bachelorette party, garter toss, cake wearing dress all night. Of 28 100 years ago, nine (one-third) disappeared, day has been Monday Saturday, ceremony shortened days one, number guests increased, party introduced.Conclusion: From narratives, it appears that primarily personal event, one most important life groom, especially for woman, whom represents permanent change social status. Until 1950s, women were more passive role than today. Through process women’s emancipation, globalization possibility free choice, values practice marriage itself changed.
